APA Style Definition

What is APA Style?

APA is the acronym that stands for the American Psychological Association.

APA Style is the set of rules that the APA maintains for writing research papers and citing your sources. Citing sources means giving credit to the original creator of information you use in your research projects. Sources cited in APA Style are called "References."

When you create a research project you join an ongoing conversation about a certain topic. When you create a list of References used in your research using APA Style, you make it possible for readers of your work to locate the sources to which you refer so that they can read those original sources in full.

Who uses APA formatting when writing research papers and citing sources? APA style is used in the Social Sciences disciplines. These include:

  • Psychology
  • Anthropology
  • Economics
  • Sociology
