According to the Cambridge Dictionary, Fake News is "false stories that appear to be news, spread on the internet or using other media, usually created to influence political views or as a joke". Fake new can be misinformation, defined by the Britannica Dictionary as "information that is not completely true or accurate". Or, its more damaging counterpart, disinformation "false information that is given to people in order to make them believe something or to hide the truth." Misinformation can be accidental, due to a misunderstanding, or deliberate; but disinformation is always malicious in nature.
Recently in the news and in general discourse the phrase "fake news" has been thrown around. What is "fake news"? How can we evaluate news and other media for disinformation?
