Palo Alto College's founding was a response to the growing need for higher education in the south side of San Antonio. In the early 1980s, the area was experiencing rapid population growth, but there were few opportunities for local residents to pursue higher education.
The Alamo Community College District (ACCD) recognized this need and began exploring the possibility of establishing a new college in the south side. After conducting a feasibility study and vocal community support, the ACCD Board of Trustees approved the creation of Palo Alto College in January 1983.
Palo Alto College officially opened its doors in 1985 and has since become a vital part of the San Antonio community, providing affordable and accessible higher education to thousands of students each year.
Archival records stored in the Ozuna Library provide primary source records about Palo Alto College's founding and ongoing success.
